Kazimir Malevich was a Russian artist and art theorist who founded the art movement known as Suprematism. He is best known for his 1915 painting Black Square which is seen as a revolutionary piece of abstract art. Malevich pushed the way forward to spiritual, and abstract art. His typography is distinctly old-fashioned and he uses none of the changes in scale, tone, or diagonal motifs employed so skillfully by other avant-garde artists. El Lissitzky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant-garde, helping develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the Soviet Union. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements. Lissitzky was also a major figure in the development of abstract art, typography and modern graphic design. Together with Malevich, artists like Lyubov Popova, Alexander Rodchenko, Natalia Goncharova, El Lissitzky are all known as Russian avant-garde artists.
